Marshall Rosenberg, Creator of NVC, Explains the Fundamental Human Need for Power

"Control in our culture gets seen as a dirty thing… But we all have a need to have some control, some power with our environment..." - Marshall Rosenberg, creator of Nonviolent Communication

The April, 2023 edition of Bliss: The Journal of Intimate Harmony is all about what it takes for a man to cultivate the ability to have a powerful erotic effect on his partner without developing the emotionally destructive characteristics that are so commonly seen in men who are skilled seducers - the sort of men that we refer to in common parlance as "Bad Boys". Is life just a choice between being a Nice Guy, an "average frustrated chump" who constantly gets relegated to the dreaded "friend zone" and secretly seethes with resentment while trying to put up the facade of being "a good little boy" or being a heartless player who gets the girls but never dares reveal anything of his softer side and must eternally get his needs met at the expense of others who end up resenting him for his ruthless tactics? Not so, not so at all.

A man can develop tremendous sexual power without stomping all over the emotional needs of others. In order to do so, he will simply need to develop a deep awareness of two fundamental human needs and the relationship between them: the need for power, and the need to contribute to life. A man who can find a way to fulfill both of these needs for himself develops a level of effectiveness and satisfaction beyond anything either the Bad Boy or The Nice Guy could ever have dreamed of.
